South Delhi

South Delhi has one of the elite and posh colonies of Delhi which is bounded by the Yamuna River on the east and the surrounding area by the other districts that include Faridabad and Gurgaon [which are Districts of Haryana that are situated on the southeast and southwest boundaries]. This district covers an area of 250 Sq. Km. and has a population of over 2.5 lakhs.

South Delhi was built around the ancient cities of Siri which was the second of the seven cities built by Alla-ud-din Khilji in 1303 AD, Tughlaqabad which was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty in the 14th Century AD and ‘Jahan Panah’, an ancient medieval city built by Sultan Muhammad Bin Tughlaq in 1327 AD. Hence, this district is a composition of both ancient and modern structures which have recently been renovated by the Delhi Tourism board attracting tourists over the years.

South Delhi homes Historical structures of the Qutub Complex, remains of Hauz Khas Complex, Old Fort or Purana Qila, Humayun’s Tomb and Tughlaqabad amidst its modern infrastructure seen in the congested lanes of Munirka, Kotla, Lodi Garden, Lotus Temple and elite colonies of Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash, New Friends Colony, Defence Colony, South Extension, Vasant Vihar, Chittaranjan Park, Pancheel Enclave, Green Park, Safdarjung Enclave, Deer Park, Jangpura and so forth, that mark the identity of this District. Chanakya Puri, which is a sub district of Central Delhi, is situated in close proximity and is known as the hub of Foreign Embassies and Consulate Offices.

Urbanisation of South Delhi has also led to the development of exquisite and branded showrooms, Restaurants, Resto-bars, Shopping Malls, Multiplexes and elite Hotels dotted around this District. Some famous shopping complexes are markets in South extension, Sarojini Nagar, Dilli Haat that retails a variety of heritage handicrafts and Handloom, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar and famous Chinese cuisines in Chanakya Puri are a must visit.

South Delhi is also known for its latest fashion trends that one will witness in its fashion retail outlets and the youngsters as well as the older crowd that hangs out in the Shopping arcades and Restaurants during weekends. This region is also known as the best place to live in and homes rich and famous businessmen.

In order to preserve the ancient historical sites in South Delhi and other places, INTACT organises ‘Heritage Walks’ annually during weekends. Tourists and Visitors who want to participate will need to register in advance by paying a very small fee which ranges from Rs. 50.00 to Rs. 200.00 per person and per walk.
