2010 Commonwealth Games

Delhi will be hosting the nineteenth Commonwealth Games in the year 2010. The games are scheduled between 3rd October and 14th October, the perfect season to visit the city. The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be largest sport event that the country will host after the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The splendid opening ceremony will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. The grand sporting event will be hosted by Asia second time. The bidding for the 2010 Commonwealth games took place in November 2003 at Commonwealth Games Federation in Montego Bay. Delhi won the bid by a huge margin of 46 to 22 votes to a Canada which has already hosted the games four times.

Since then, Delhi has been under very hard work of development to host the games perfectly. In preparation for the games, the government is taking step to teach skills and global language, English to workers who will tackle the foreign tourist and athletes during the Games. The cab drivers, security staff and other workers are under training. The government has already taken steps to ensure the required power supple in the city during the games. There is a need to increase the power production from 4500 MW to around 7000 MW. To meet this demand, new power plants have been set up.

In addition to this preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi is also preparing to give a warm welcome to athletes and tourists. Free accommodation will be provided to all the participating athletes at the Games Village. Other benefits like free transport to tourists place, a trip to the world famous Taj Mahal will also be organized for the athletes. A separate village known as the Games Village has been set up which will house all the athletes and the concerned officials during the games.

The police force of different states has been trained to assist tourist and athletes and to ensure their safety. The Delhi city has been under massive construction and cleaning projects are been carried out in every nook and corner of the city. Hundreds of slums have been demolished and the people have been shifted to shelters. Bamboo screens have been erected along the slums.

The Queens baton Relay having the greeting message from the Queen started from the Buckingham palace on October 29th. It will reach the hosting city on 3rd October 2010 during the opening ceremony
