Gurgaon

Gurgaon is a part of the National Capital Region [NCR] of Delhi and is popularly known as the ‘The Millennium City’ or ‘Cyber City’. It is situated in the northern part of Haryana State and homes a population of over 1,000,000. It also encompasses the town of Manesar. This region homes various business hubs and houses Major IT companies thus offering one of the best infrastructure be it roads, flyovers, housing Societies, Apartments, Schools and Medical facilities.

Historically, Gurgaon was once a home to Guru Dronacharya and hence was named as ‘Guru-Gram’. Legend has that the Pandavas and Kauravas gifted this city to their respected Guru Dronacharya and later through the years its name changed to ‘Gurgaon’.

Gurgaon is well known for its IT, ITES, Manufacturing & Pharmaceuticals Industries, BPO and Outsourcing Companies including off shoring services that massively contributes to the economy of the City. This was possible due to the excellent infrastructure and availability of skilled resources in the City and neighbouring states including the Country. Good road connectivity and close proximity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport makes this town a preferred destination for corporate clients and business investors. Introduction of multiple flyovers and ease of connectivity with the National Highway – 8 also adds as a bonus point for the town and its inhabitants.

Gurgaon witnesses a rapid influx in professionals from all across the Country searching for jobs and livelihood. This is made possible due to the growing demand for skilled professionals and availability of all resources required for an amicable stay with apartments, flats, housing societies, independent homes and residential colonies available at affordable rates.

Gurgaon also homes world class Shopping Malls and Commercial Complexes such as the DLF City Centre, DLF Grand Mall, DT Mall, DT Mega Mall, Metropolitan Mall, MGF Mega City and the Sahara Mall to name a few. Upcoming projects are in the pipeline to better the infrastructure and add more malls. One such example is the upcoming ‘Golden Triangle City Centre’ that will accommodate four skyscrapers to be constructed in Sector 29 by the Haryana government.

Gurgaon offers an 8-lane expressway that runs between Delhi and Gurgaon and connects to the National Highway – 8 that further connects Delhi with Jaipur and Mumbai. This expressway also connects Gurgaon to Dhaula Kuan in Delhi covering a distance of 28 kilometres. The Expressway is also being extended to Jaipur [225.6 kilometres] which will be completed by June 2011. A 32-lane Toll Gate at the Delhi - Gurgaon border is known as the largest in South Asia and second largest in Asia.

Gurgaon offers numerous bus services and taxi cabs that ply in and around the city. The recent highlight of the city is the advent of the ‘Radio Tuk Tuk’ Services that offers door to door commuting solutions. These Radio Auto Rickshaws are red in colour and offer reliable and hassle-free services. They charge a nominal rate of Rs. 50.00 for the first 3 Kms and subsequently Rs. 8.00 per km. This has greatly contributed towards the availability of transportation within the city which was initially lacking and hence is an added boon for the daily commuters.

Another initiative seen in Gurgaon is the commencement of ‘Exclusive Pink Auto Rickshaws for Women’ in the city owning to the threats posed to working women especially while commuting. These autos are pink coloured so that they can easily be identified. The Gurgaon police have taken serious steps towards ensuring the safety of working women in Gurgaon after several incidents of rape were reported in the past. Only Drivers that have been verified by the Gurgaon police will operate these pink coloured auto rickshaws. Initially, 30 pink auto rickshaws would operate from the Gurgaon Metro stations to major destinations within the Millennium City and later more will be introduced, if needed.

Another initiative to improve the public transport system in Gurgaon is to make bus services available frequently to ply between Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The state transport department has decided to purchase 450 new buses which will operate by the end of August 2010 that will include both Inter-State and Intra-State Bus Services.

The Gurgaon - Qutub Minar Metro Corridor will be operational for public on 21st June 2010. The extension of this metro corridor to Central Secretariat [Delhi] will open on 3rd September 2010 which will merge with the existing ‘Yellow line’ operating between Jahangir puri Metro Station [Delhi] and Central Secretariat [Delhi]. It is rumoured that Haryana also plans to set up its own Metro Corporation in order to extend the metro rail facility to other areas within the National Capital Region that fall under the State of Haryana and the plan is to extend the Metro Corridor up to Manesar. However, there has been no official announcement with reference to this project.

Another project which has been announced is the advent of an elevated Metro Rail corridor with 6 Metro Stations running on a 6 km rail line that will connect the main Sikanderpur Delhi Metro Station to National Highway – 8. This project will be privately financed and owned by DLF and will be completed by the year 2013.

Another mode of Transport is the Gurgaon Railway Station situated at the western end of the original city. This Rail link connects Gurgaon to Rewari towards the south and the Delhi Cantt Railway Station towards the northern side.

Gurgaon is situated very close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport that can be reached in 15 minutes by car via the Delhi - Gurgaon Expressway 8.
