Vasant Kunj

Vasant Kunj is a prime residential complex with Farm Houses in South Delhi that houses approximately 1000,000 residents making it the largest colony in Asia. It has residential colonies that are surrounded by lush green environs set amidst rich and natural surroundings. It is also known as one of the most plush localities in Delhi and a sought after place to live in. Most of the famous retired Cricket Players also reside in this area. It encompasses areas like Munirka and Vasant Vihar and borders Mahipalpur, Masoodpur also spelled as ‘Masudpur’ and Saket.

The Indian Government acquired massive farm lands from nearby Villages like Munirka, Masoodpur and Mahipalpur in the early 1960s post partition and established the Vasant Kunj region in South Delhi. The construction work began during the late 1980s and this responsibility was awarded to the Delhi Development Authority or ‘DDA’ in short.

Vasant Kunj was then divided into four sectors named ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ Sectors and each of them [other than Sector ‘A’] were further sub divided into pockets numbered from ‘Pocket 1’ up to ‘Pocket 7’. Sector ‘A’ being the first and the oldest Sectors of the lot to be developed was sub divided into pockets named as ‘Pocket A’, Pocket B’ and ‘Pocket C’. Each Sector also homes their own local shopping centres that provide all the essential daily needs for a comfortable settlement and is often seen crowded with youngsters and residents of the region.

Vasant Kunj is also considered as one of the most well organized region in South Delhi that is self contained. Be it a Movie Theatre or Eating Outlets and Restaurants or a place for recreational activities like a game of Pool or even a place to hang out at night with friends and family and at the same time enjoy exquisite cuisines and a glass of wine, spirits, beer or cocktails then this area is that place to be in. It has its own clubs, pubs and discotheques for an invigorating nightlife experience. It houses the Headquarters of ‘FabIndia’ at B -11 Sopping Complex and the Commercial Plaza at C-2 Market that also offers great eating outlets and a discothèque. The Aruna Asaf Ali Road in this region is also fringed by a variety of eating Joints such as the renowned ‘Karim’s’ and ‘Sheng Villa’. Masoodpur also homes a shopping complex on the main road that has several tailors and mobile stores.

Vasant Kunj was initially a prime residential area that has developed into one of the most popular commercial centres in South Delhi. The Shopping Malls in this region along with the Shopping Malls situated in Saket are considered as the biggest ‘Shopping Hubs’ in the Southern region of the Capital City. Another Shopping Mall under construction will be known as the largest Mall in Asia and 4th largest in the World. There are also a total of 7 other Malls under construction that include Airtel, Ambience, Maruti Suzuki, ONGC, Vasant Square Mall and DLF Emporio Mall [which will be the most expensive Mall in India]. Another feature that will be added to this region is a Bio-Diversity Park that will help in the conservation and preservation of Flora and Fauna of Delhi and its surrounding area.

Vasant Kunj also has Hospitals like the Spinal Injuries Hospital and Fortis Hospital and an Apollo Clinic situated at the B-11 Shopping Complex of the region. It also has several renowned Schools such are the Bhatnagar Public School, D.P.S, G.D. Goenka School, Ryan Public School and Vasant Valley School. It homes the only Catholic Church in Delhi that is dedicated to ‘Saint Alphonsa’, who was the first woman Saint from India located at Green Avenue Lane of this area. It is also popular amongst tourist for housing the ancient ‘Tomb of Sultan Ghari’ built by Sultan Iltutmish in 1231 AD.
