Delhi was always known as the seat of learning of modern India and numerous Institutes have evolved through the years in New Delhi. The educational system for higher learning in India is considered as the third largest in the world, first being the United States followed by China. At the tertiary level, the main governing body is the University Grants Commission of India whose function is to enforce the educational standards, offer advice to the government and assist to coordinate between the centre and the state. The Accreditation process of all these Institutes for higher learning and education is overseen by 12 autonomous institutions that were established by the University Grants Commission [India].

According to the report of 2009, India homes 20 central universities, 215 state universities, 100 deemed universities, 5 institutions that are established and functions under the State Act while 13 institutes are of national significance. Besides these, the other academic Institutes include 16,000 colleges that comprise of 1,800 institutes established exclusively as women's colleges and a large number of technology institutes who function under these universities and institutions. However, on the tertiary level of education, more emphasis is given to science and technology and lately, Distance learning programs offered by these Institutes has also become an integral feature of the Indian higher education system.

Institutes such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences [AIIMS] and the Indian Institute of Technology [IIT] situated in Delhi are globally acclaimed owing to their standard of undergraduate education in medical science and the latter in the field of engineering, however, Institutes of Basic research such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) situated in Bangaluru, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) situated in Kolkata and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TFIR) situated in Mumbai are acclaimed for their standard of research in basic science. However, India is yet to produce world class universities such as Harvard and Cambridge or even one of such standard or even the likes of them.

In 2005 and 2006, 3 Indian Institutes were listed amongst the Top 200 Universities in the world that include the Indian Institute of Technology [IIT], Indian Institute of Management [IIM] and the Jawaharlal Nehru University [JNU]. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science [Pilani] and 6 Indian Institutes of Technology were listed by ‘Asiaweek’ to be amongst the top 20 Science and Technology Schools in Asia. In 2010, the Hyderabad based Indian School of Business [Private and unaccredited Institute] was ranked as the 12th Global MBA Institute by the Financial Times of London.

Even today, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences [AIIMS] is still recognized as a global leader in the field of medical research and treatment while in the field of Technical Education, The Indian Institute of Management is recognised as the Country’s premier education institute offering world class facilities. Apart from this, several other Regional Engineering Colleges [REC] are also deemed as National Institutes of Technology. The UGC also assist in promoting common research such as the Nuclear Science Centre at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and operate inter-university centres at a number of locations throughout the country.

Delhi has always offered a highly competitive world class educational system to their students apart from housing top ranked universities. However, there are several Institutes that operate only with the sole objective of making money and Regulatory authorities such as the AICTE and UGC are trying hard to eradicate these unrecognised private universities who run courses without any affiliation. Mostly, Students from the rural areas and semi urban backgrounds fall victim to these colleges and institutes.
