The National Institute of Fashion Technology, also known as NIFT in short is a well known premier Fashion Institute of India. It was established in 1986 under the umbrella of the Ministry of Textiles of the Government of India. It offers Design, Management and Technology programmes in the field of Fashion and assist in developing professional leadership positions in the Industry of International Fashion business.

In 2006, NIFT was granted a statutory status under the act of Parliament of India that allows the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions to its students, hence, making it the first-of-its-kind in the entire globe. This Institute offers a common platform for fashion business education, research and training through a network of 14 national centres located at New Delhi, Bangaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Raebareli, and Shillong & Taliparamba. It has also established an international centre in Mauritius.

NIFT was set up with the main objective to fulfil the long-felt need of an export-oriented garment industry. It felt the need to train interested candidates in the field of fashion design, apparel marketing and merchandising & garment manufacturing technology. Today, this Institute has become one of the leading fashion institutes in India that is at par with the renowned New York based ‘Fashion Institute of Technology’ and UK based ‘Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design’.

NIFT is also the founder member of ‘Fashion Schools' Foundation of the World’ that comprise of 34 worldwide Fashion Schools and has furnished leading fashion designers of India. The Institute has also evolved as a Centre of Excellence in imparting multi-disciplinary disciplines and realistic education to its students. It has a prime vision to present itself as a strong global leader in the field of Fashion Technology and focuses to globally connect with other International Institutes and Industries.

NIFT has also entered into collaborations with leading fashion institutes and organisations across the world and has signed MOUs [Memorandum of Understanding] with reputed institutes such as Demontfort University [UK], University of Leeds [UK], University of the Arts London [UK], Domus Academy [Italy], ENSAIT [France], Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology [Australia], Ryerson University [Canada], University of North Carolina [USA] & University of Philadelphia [USA] just to name a few.

NIFT offers regular & full time programs that run at the Graduate level and the Post Graduate level. The undergraduate programmes include Fashion Communication [4-year course], Apparel Production [4-year course], Fashion Design [4-year course], Textile Design and Development [4-year course] & Accessory Design [7-year course] disciplines. These undergraduate degree programs prepares student for prestigious professional fields like Advertising, Event Managements, Fashion Journalism, Graphic Design, Photography and Retail Management & Visual Merchandising. The Masters level programs include Master of Design, Master of Fashion Management and Master of Fashion Technology disciplines. The Institutes also offers a two-year postgraduate diploma program in Knitwear Design and Technology and has recently launched a Ph. D program.

The Program structure in NIFT ensures continuous evaluation process of students, Frequent and regular feedback process and collaboration with leading educational institutions such as the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) based in New York, USA; Nottingham Trent University (NTU) based in UK and other Premier Fashion Institutions in India. It also features a Computer centre that runs main educational courses like ATD (Computer Aided Textile Designing), CAFI (Computer Application for the Fashion Industry), DAT (Design Automation Technology), TIFF (A Design Technology Course) & Tuka-Tech and Lectra for marker making.

NIFT has also produced some of the best star alumni of the Fashion Design department like Aarti Solanki, Abhishek Gupta, Anshu Arora Sen, Ashish Soni, J. J. Valaya, Madhusudan Lal [who has launched his own label], Manish Arora, Nandita Basu, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Ritu Beri, Rohit Bal and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. A few NIFT alumni are also internationally renowned in the field of exports, domestic design, design consultancy and retailing that include Nitin Gupta, and Chiranjit Maity to name a few.
