Delhi University or the University of Delhi is also popularly known as 'DU' by Students. It is a Central University situated in Delhi that is also known as one of the most prestigious universities in Asia. It was established in 1922 and offers under-graduate and post graduate level courses in all streams and disciplines. It is also ranked as the top University in India and the Vice-President of India is the Chancellor of DU.
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, also known as ‘IP’, is a State University in Delhi that was established in 1998 by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi under the provisions of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha Vishwavidyalaya Act. It was set up with the main purpose to ease the burden of the already established ‘Delhi University’ or ‘DU’ and has emerged as one of the best pioneers of education in the country. This University established separate departments for individual disciplines such as Business Management, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Technology.
Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU is a National Open University that houses its headquarters in New Delhi. It was named after the country’s former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It was constructed with a budget of Rs. 2,000 crores and was established in 1985 after the Parliament of India passed the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985. Today, IGNOU is known as one of the prestigious and only genuine Open University in India that offers correspondence as well as regular courses in under-graduate & post graduate levels.
Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU was founded by the Country’s former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi who named the University after her father and the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. It was established in 1969 under the act of the Parliament of India and appointed G. Parthasarathy as the First Vice-Chancellor of JNU. The prime objective to establish such a University was to introduce a Premier Institution of Higher Learning for students of former Developing and Third World Countries. Since its inception, JNU has been the centre for Third World studies and has promoted research and teaching in various post graduate level and doctoral level courses that has led to the increase in engagement of its students and teachers in higher level academic work as well as National and International Policy Making.
Jamia Hamdard University is another renowned University located in New Delhi that was established in 1989. It was founded by the revered Janab Hakeem Abdul Hameed Saheb who was a true Gandhian in spirit and very simple in his temperament. He was born on 14th September 1908 in Delhi and was instrumental in influencing the establishment of this University. His father, Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed also contributed immensely to the concept of establishing a University that could impart and carry forward the principles, knowledge and methodology of Unani Medicine. He improved the ancient system of Unani medicine and therapeutics. He named the University as ‘Hamdard’ as he wanted the public to benefit from the efficacy of Unani Medicine and hence share knowledge and encourage interest in this field of Medicine.
Jamia Millia Islamia University is a Central University that has its own campus located in South Delhi. It was originally established in 1920 at Aligarh, former United Provinces of India during the British Raj. In 1988, it was accorded as an Indian Central University according to the act of the Parliament of India. 'Jamia' and 'Millia' are Urdu or Arabic words which mean 'University' and 'National' respectively. This University was established by the Nationalist Muslims, however, it is secular in its character and approach to education and its standards. This University offers courses at School, Under-graduate and Post graduate levels and does not have any colleges affiliated to it.
National Law University is a State Law University located in Delhi that was established by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi under the provisions of the National Law University Act of 2007 and Act 1 of 2008. This is another premier Law University that had joined the prestigious bandwagon of several other premier Law Universities that have already established themselves in India. This Law University was set up with the main objective to create a premier 'Global Legal Law Institute' that could compete with the best of Law Colleges and Universities across the Country and the Globe. It focuses on imparting knowledge on the varied aspects of law to students and also to expose them to a wide range of opportunities in the field of Law and legal profession across India and Abroad. It features a state of art infrastructure equipped with all the facilities for training, learning and research work in the field of Law and its allied disciplines.
