Delhi University (DU)
Delhi University or 'The University of Delhi' or just DU in short is a Unitary, Teaching and Residential University rendered by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. It is an Indian Central University of Delhi that is considered as one of the most prestigious universities in Asia. It was established in 1922 and offers under-graduate and post graduate level courses in all streams and disciplines. It is also ranked as the top University in India and the Vice-President of India is the Chancellor of DU.
In 2010, DU was ranked number 371 in the global map of Educational Centres by the THES - QS in the 'World Universities Ranking'. Delhi University has two campuses that include the 'North Campus' and the 'South Campus' wherein each campus is situated in their respective Northern and Southern parts of Delhi.
The 'North Campus' is well connected via road and the yellow line of the Delhi Metro Link with the ‘Vishwavidyalaya’ Metro Station located close to the campus area. ‘Vishwavidyalaya’ is a Hindi word which means ‘University’ and hence derived its name from the DU North Campus location. This campus is approximately 7 kms from the main Inter State Bus Terminal of Delhi from where Public DTC Buses ply to, from and around the city at frequent intervals making commuting very convenient for students. In fact almost all out-stationed Students studying in DU North Campus reside in and around the North Campus area of DU owing to which this locality is always buzzing with life and exudes a youthful ambience.
The ‘South Campus’ came much later and was set up during the initial months of 1973 and started its first post graduate courses in various departments of the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences in a rented building. It was later allotted with a land near the Dhaula Kuan area and the South Campus Offices and Teaching activities shifted to this new campus in 1983. The South Campus is known for its excellence in life sciences and runs departments in the stream of Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and Plant molecular Biology. This Campus also offers various masters and doctoral degree programs in the field of Biochemistry, Electronics, Information Technology, Microbiology, Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and so forth.

The Delhi University Library System or ‘DULS’ in short, homes a total of 34 Libraries. It subscribes to 29 Electronic Databases that is accessed via the web facility. Besides these, the Library has 20 databases that can be accessed through the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium. This Library System promotes an ‘Open Access e-resources’ and conducts Information Literacy Programs or ‘ILP’ on a regular basis for the benefit of students, researchers and Faculty members of the University of Delhi. Selected DU Libraries include Arts Library, Central Science Library, DUCC Library, Law Faculty Library, Ratan Tata Library, South Campus Library and the University Library.
The University of Delhi also offers Correspondence courses through several interfaces that include the School of Open Learning, Centre for Professional and Technical Training, DU-GENPACT Project, Courses under Professional Skills Project in Collaboration with CII and DU-MetLife Insurance Course.
The University of Delhi or DU also provides lodging facilities and Hostels that include the Ambedkar Ganguly Students House for Women, Aravalli Boys Hostel located in South Campus, D. S. Kothari Hostel, Geetanjali Hostel for Women located in South Campus, Gwyer Hall, International Students House for Men, International Students House for Women, Jubilee Hall, Mansarovar Hostel, Meghdoot Hostel, North Eastern Hostel for Girls, P. G. Men's Hostel, Saramati P.G. Men's Hostel located in South Campus, University Hostel for Women and V. K. R. V. Rao Hostel.
