GURU GOBIND SINGH INDRAPRASTHA UNIVERSITY (GGSIPU)

The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University which is popularly known as ‘GGSIPU’ or colloquially as ‘Indraprastha University’ or ‘IP’ is a Public and Professional University that was founded on 28th March 1998 as a teaching and affiliating University. It affiliates more than 120 colleges in Delhi and the National Capital Region and is a Member of the ‘Association of Commonwealth Universities’, ‘Association of Indian Universities’, ‘Medical Council of India’ and ‘Distance Education Council’.

The GGSIP University was established as the Indraprastha University or [IPU] in 1998. Mr. K. K. Aggarwal who is an eminent I. T. expert and Professor was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the IP University. Later, this university was officially renamed as the ‘Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University or GGSIPU’ in honour of the 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh in 2001. Despite the name, this University operates as a secular centre with no religious affiliations.

The GGSIP University was set up to minimise the burden of the existing Universities established in Delhi that included the Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia University and Indira Gandhi National Open University; all that operate as Central Universities. The Delhi University had reached the point of saturation being the only Affiliating University and hence the Government of Delhi decided to open a new State University and the GGSIP University was formed after a Bill was passed in the legislative assembly authorising its operation as a teaching and affiliating University that in turn lessened the burden of DU. The GGSIP University operated with a prime focus towards professional courses unlike the Delhi University which is oriented towards general courses.

The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University is considered as one of the pioneers in the field of education in India. It is the first university in Asia and the only university in India to receive the ‘Platinum Technology Award’ for quality and excellence in the field of education at Geneva in Switzerland. This prestigious award was presented by the Otherways Management and Consulting [OMAC], which is an International Organisation based in Paris, France.

The GGSIP University is governed by the board of management of the Universities wherein the Vice-Chancellor of this university who is appointed by the Government of Delhi and responsible to the board of management acts as a daily administrator of this University.

The GGSIP University has two campuses that include the ‘Kashmere Gate Campus’ and the newly constructed ‘Dwarka Campus’. The IP University was originally established at the Kashmere Gate Campus while the campus in Dwarka is the latest addition which spans over a massive area of 60 acres. Currently, the IP University operates from its Dwarka campus wherein most of the portions are still under construction.

The GGSIPU houses 13 Schools and 2 Centres within its campus in Dwarka [South West Delhi District] while a few still function from the Kashmere Gate campus site. It also houses a Constitutional College named ‘Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology’ which falls under the direct administration of this university. These Schools and Centres are also the faculties of the Indraprastha University that are known amongst the pioneer institutions of this university and its curriculum is different from other affiliated institutions.

The IP University Schools include the University School of Architecture & Planning, University School of Basic & Applied Sciences, University School of Biotechnology, University School of Chemical Technology, University School of Education, University School of Engineering & Technology, University School of Environment Management, University School of Humanities & Social Sciences, University School of Information Technology, University School of Law and Legal Studies, University School of Management Studies, University School of Mass Communication and University School of Medicine & Para-Medical Health Sciences while the University Centres are the University Centre for Disaster Management Studies and the University Centre for IT Services & Infrastructure Management.

Almost all of the GGSIP University departments have shifted to the new Dwarka campus from Kashmere Gate except for the University School of Management Studies, University School of Education and the University School of Architecture & Planning that will move in the month of July, 2011.

At present, the IP University runs 10 Schools in the Dwarka campus who impart professional education to more than 3000 graduate and post-graduate level students. Once the entire University and its departments have moved to the new Dwarka Campus, the Kashmere Gate campus will be solely acquired by the ‘Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology’ and the ‘Ambedkar University’ that will focus to provide ‘Research and Development’ facilities of international standards to students.

The Hostels for lodging students of the IP University are located at the E-block section of the University in the Dwarka Campus which are still under construction.

The GGSIP University Information Resource Center Library [UIRC] was established in September 1999. This Library was recently shifted to the new Dwarka Campus, however, the ‘Information Technology’ and ‘Business Sections’ of the library still function from the Kashmere Gate Campus site. The UIRC Library offers educational and knowledge support to students, researchers and its faculty members. It is fully computerised and has a Web OPAC system that assists its members and international academic communities to assess online information on the library holdings. At present, this centre caters to over 4000 members which have rapidly increased in numbers through the years.
