The Indian Agricultural Research Institute also known as IARI is a premier national Institute for agricultural research, education and extension in India. It is situated in the Pusa Campus area in New Delhi and is located about 8 kms west of the New Delhi Railway Station and about 16 kms east of the Indira Gandhi International Airport [DEL] situated at Palam. The Institute campus spans over a massive area of 500 hectares which translates approximately to 1250 acres.
The IARI serves as a primary contributor to science and society through development of human resources, first quality research and generation of appropriate technologies. The famous Green Revolution was pioneered and conceptualised in the fields of IARI while the students who graduate from this Institute constitute the core of the quality human resource in the agricultural research and education of the Country.
The IARI Institute has continuously adjusted and improved its programmes, policies and plans in order to effectively respond to the needs and opportunities of the country and its people. During the 1950s, the rapid expansion of all the core programmes in the three interactive fields of research, education and extension were attributed to the advancement of scientific disciplines hence providing a base for its expansion throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s too. Besides the basic research, applied and commodity research also gained significance that resulted in the development of several but popular high yielding varieties of major crops and their associated management technologies. This growth contributed to an exponential increase in the production of national food and agricultural produce.
Facilities within the IARI include Biosystematics and Identification Services, Library Services & Phytotron Facility. The IARI Library is known as one of the largest and the finest agro-biological libraries in South East Asia. It homes a total of 6, 00,000 publications that includes 3, 50,000 journal volumes; 1, 00,000 books / monographs; 45,000 bulletins; 30,000 news clippings; 30,000 reports; 15,000 post-graduate theses; 10,000 pamphlets and other reference materials such as 4,680 newspapers. All these collection can be accessed by its 2,000 members that comprised of scientists, technical staff and students. The Library also caters to over 130 users who consult approximately 2,000 to 2,500 documents on a daily basis. Visitors alone constitute to 8,000 in numbers who visit this Library for reference and reading purposes every year. It also homes 2,751 volumes consisting of 20,000 loose issues of journals, reports and bulletins that were bounded.
The IARI provides three Guest Houses that include the Ganga International Guest House, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Farmer’s Hostel and Sindhu Scientist Hostel; all situated within the campus. These Guest Houses cater primarily to official guests of the IARI; ICAR; participants of Conferences / Seminars / Workshops / Symposia & Training Programmes that are organised by the Institute and the ICAR sponsored events. The Scientists and Researchers from other ICAR Institutes, Central & State Government & SAUs are also offered accommodation only if they inform the Officer In-charge of the respective Guest Houses well in advance and secure a reservation.
The IARI only provides accommodation subject to the availability of rooms at the time of arrival of their guests or event participants. The Guest Houses provide all the essential amenities and facilities that include a bed with mattress, bed sheet, pillow & blanket. All the guests must check these items at the time of occupying the room and are responsible for its proper use and upkeep including the materials & fixtures provided in the rooms. Guests are liable to pay charges for any loss, misuse or damage caused to the room and its items during their stay.
