Lajpat Nagar

Lajpat Nagar is a residential and commercial complex in South Delhi that was named after Lala Lajpat Rai who was popularly known as the ‘Lion of Punjab’. This region was developed in the 1950’s and was mostly inhabited by Hindus and Sikhs who relocated from a newly formed Pakistan post the partition of India in 1947, however, one will also notice people from neighbouring countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa residing here.

The Indian migrants settled in Lajpat Nagar and started small businesses that are now transformed into massive stores situated in the Lajpat Nagar Central Market which is also popular and one of the prime shopping zones in Delhi. Today, this suburb falls under the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency and the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. It is also situated near areas like Ashram Chowk, Defence Colony, East of Kailash, Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh and South Extension.

History has that before settling in Lajpat Nagar, the Indian Migrants were provided refugee camps within the Old Fort premises and later, the Government allotted plots measuring 15 ft x 60 ft in areas like Lajpat Nagar, Patel Nagar, Rajendra Nagar and so forth. These plots were constructed like army barracks with asbestos roofs and today have been converted into multi-storeyed buildings and commercial centres. This Colony also housed several refugee camps for Bengali widows and is known today as Kasturba Ashram. This region also has a railway line that passes through the north which crosses through a local railway station situated in this locality itself and is usually used only by freight trains.

Lajpat Nagar is divided into four parts named as ‘Lajpat Nagar I’, ‘Lajpat Nagar II’, ‘Lajpat Nagar III’ [situated north of the Ring Road] and ‘Lajpat Nagar IV’ [situated south of the Ring Road]. It also encompasses Housing colonies like Amar Colony, Dayanand Colony, Double Storey or Nirmal Puri, National Park and Vikram Vihar.

The Lajpat Nagar Central Market is known as one of the oldest markets in Delhi and is a place where one can shop till they drop dead tired as all the items and products sold here are very reasonably priced and fits a shopaholic’s budget perfectly well. One can find uptown accessories and designer clothing to jewellery, bags, shoes and the latest fashionable items both for children, men and women of all ages and size.

Ladies can choose from a variety of ethnic and fashionable ladies suit available in all sizes and for all ages. Lajpat Nagar IV Market is also known as the ‘Amar Colony Market’ which is famous for eating joints that serves ‘momos’ and ‘Kathi rolls’. It also homes famous restaurants and an Institution for the Blind.

Lajpat Nagar is well connected by DTC Buses and the Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System. Route No. 543 connects Anand Vihar in East Delhi to Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi whereas the ‘Teevr Mudrika’ Service connects Lajpat Nagar to the Rohini in North Delhi and Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi. The recently operational Lajpat Nagar Metro Station is an elevated platform station situated on the ‘Violet Line’ and is located just between the Jangpura Metro Station and the Moolchand Metro Station. These Metro Stations and the First Section of the ‘Violet Line’ was opened and functional since 3rd October, 2010. The Lajpat Nagar Metro Station is just 15 minutes from the Central Secretariat Metro Station and approximately 25 to 30 minutes from the Sarita Vihar Metro Station.

Lajpat Nagar is also situated approximately 23 kms away from Indira Gandhi International Airport, 15 minutes from the Nizamuddin Railway Station and 35 minutes from New Delhi Railway Station. It is also well connected to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium located just 10 minutes away and Connaught Place located just 25 minutes away.
